This Privacy Policy explains how Echochamber.ai ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our browser extension and website. By using our service, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Data We Collect

1.1 Article Data

When you open the extension popup on a news article, we collect:

  • The URL and title of the page
  • The visible text content of the article
  • A thumbnail image URL (from Open Graph or Twitter card metadata)
  • The article's publication date (if available in page metadata)

This data is only collected when you explicitly open the popup. The extension does not monitor your browsing activity in the background.

1.2 Device & Session Data

On first install, we generate and store a random device identifier (UUID) locally and register it with our servers. We also collect:

  • The extension version number
  • Your browser's user agent string
  • Your operating system platform
  • Your browser language setting

A session token is issued in return and stored locally in your browser's extension storage. It is used to authenticate subsequent requests.

1.3 Feedback Data

If you submit a thumbs up or thumbs down rating on a recommended article, we record your rating (0 or 1) along with the article identifier and your device identifier.

1.4 Clickthrough Data

When you click on a recommended article, we record that a click occurred on that article. No additional personal information is collected at this point.

1.5 Waitlist Data

If you sign up for our waitlist on the website, we collect your email address solely to notify you about product updates.

2. How We Use Your Data

We use the data collected to:

  • Analyze article content and detect political or ideological bias using AI
  • Find related articles from sources with contrasting viewpoints via vector similarity search
  • Authenticate your requests and maintain your session across uses
  • Improve the quality of our recommendations based on aggregate feedback
  • Monitor service health and diagnose errors

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the core functionality of the extension.

3. Data Sharing

We do not sell your data. We share data only with the following parties, strictly to operate the service:

  • Our backend API (api.echochamber.ai) — receives article content, device registration data, feedback, and clickthrough events to power the extension's core features.
  • Sentry (sentry.io) — receives error reports and diagnostic information from the extension to help us identify and fix bugs. No article content is included in error reports.

4. Data Retention

Article data, feedback, and clickthrough events are stored on our servers to power search and improve recommendations. Your device identifier and session token are stored locally in your browser's extension storage and are cleared if you uninstall the extension. You may contact us at any time to request deletion of data associated with your device identifier.

5. Data Security

All communication between the extension and our servers uses HTTPS. Session tokens are used to authenticate requests. We do not store passwords or payment information.

6. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the data we hold associated with your device
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Object to the processing of your data

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@echochamber.ai with your device identifier (visible in the extension's storage).

7. Children's Privacy

Our service is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of England and Wales.
